Curtain Raiser

To our family and other animals,

I am pleased to inform you that after much deliberation and even more technical ineptitude, I have finally installed this platform for our use. For those of you who are familiar with blogging, you have another platform to air your views (if they aren't already overventilated). For those of you who are not familiar with blogging and other such 'miracles' of modern science, just jump and pray someone will lend you their chute.

Let the proceedings begin.

May the force be with us.

Swathi

  1. Good job Swathi. I like the idea of a family blog as I already see a huge participation going by the family's facebook and netlog enthusiasm.

Just a small request... we'll keep the language simple so the laywoman in me can appreciate and understand.
How do we get gokul into this?
Would like to hear from him too even if it is techo stuff.
And guys if we can post pictures.. would like to see a lot of those.
    looking forward to posts.

  2. Awesome girl! That's a cool twist to the Maniyam tale in electronic correspondence.

I am going to start with a travel blog.... I am at Jalisco presently and will give you some insights of the Highlands soon.

  3. Great idea! Since email is so 20th century and IMs don't quite capture the context of collaborative conversations and story tellings, I think group blogging is a wonderful way to share news, articles and ideas of mutual interest. We could also post the occasional musings and stream of consciousness notes of experiences in these interesting times...

  4. This is a great personalised channel.A random topic every month/two weeks can be the blogging itinerary .
The TED Talks have been informative, for some of the people who get easily ' inspired' by highly researched presentations of future predictions, international relationships, and technology.

I wasn't ,to the fullest!Perhaps I might have,if I was seated in one of the TED mystical halls.Sixth sense technology,7th,19th...we have never set ourselves limits, but where are we heading with all this ?

I do believe, that what we are about to face in the future,be it India becoming a superpower,or China overshadowing us or the Obama game plan,is happening. The future is right outside our doors, people!
We can either open it tomorrow or now.
We should rather,CONTRIBUTE,instead of constantly, picturing these 'magnified graphical predictions' .
One suggestion.we must start our family ' environment' campaign/club.My ideas about this shall develop in due time.

Wow,it was fun, bringing out all that was contained in during the nauseous exam time.(believe me,my parents)
    Kudos thothi !

  7. I just had to go on air if only to say what a wonderful bunch of bloggers all you guys have turned out to be. Hats off to Swathi for starting this blog and infusing it with a zany zest and whacky verve (one and the same actually!). Diksha, you really rock kid! What a lot of interesting thoughts.
Bhamini and Brinda - you are so irreppressible(I was sorely tempted to double letter all of this word)!! You dont really need an excuse to write your thoughts. And you add so much colour and character to the venture. Aparna's travelogues should be very intersting too.
I suppose I am the flag bearer for the oldies brigade (hopefully not the pall bearer too - as my blogs alone may kill off a goodly number!!!).
I have this "armchair" kind of passion for issues relating to Environment. So here is an appeal for all you folks out there. Stop (or atleast reduce) use of plastics, chemicals in food, gas guzzling cars, high power and heat lighting (read incandescent lamps)and go green.
We will come up with more constructive ways of achieving this by and by and everyone can help make this happen.
It's great to be on-board and would like to see more men (Vicks and Ganesh - your contributions acknowledged and hoping for more)on the board.
    Cheers
    Gopu

  8. Oh my goodness, now i have to retype everything that i typed out 10 mins back, with kutti on one arm and clicking away at the keys with the other hand, scrambling to get all my thoughts on screen with him bawling on the side - must've pressed something, 'coz all of a sudden my computer closed Firefox and shut itself down. Phew !! The fates are against me !! But he's asleep now and i'm back at the computer.

So .... hi family. I found out abt this blog accidentally, while taking to Vikram yday - i must have missed Swathi's email, after all i do have 5211 UNREAD emails in my Inbox, and i only get enough time to read maybe 7-8 at any given time, during which time another 10 must've silently landed into my Inbox. Swathi's email must've been #9.

Gopu chithappa, please don't repress your thoughts at all, you make a very lively blogger, so keep holding the flag up for your brigade, chin up, shoulders back, gut in, and march on; do comment on our comments and add your own opinions about the world and current issues. You might be surprised to find competition within your group pretty soon, so as the Scout's pledge goes ... "Be Prepared", or atleast that's what i've read in books about Scouts.

I was so excited at the prospect of reading all your posts that i quickly put away my folded clothes into their respective cupboards and drawers, a task that i am usually lazy to get to.

Swathi: thanks for making this happen, and yes, i second the thought about using simple language for simple people like me, but ofcourse this is meant to be a blog, so on the other hand, maybe you should feel free to write as you please, and we can always ask for a translation :-D.

BTW, Kutti also read all your messages and here's what he had to say " blah blah blah blah blah". Yep, that's his latest "language".

Diksha: WHO ARE YOU and what has VIT done to you, what are you talking, me no comprende. You know it's interesting to see you raising arms literally, all fired up about causes, as is typical at that age and stage of life. Glad to know you're thinking about the environment, i think some of us have been doing that for a while and continue to do so, all in our own silent ways in our own houses and communities and countries. So let's keep at it and change all our light bulbs to CFLs. Can we set a target date for that, family? Year end sounds doable? Hope to hear from everyone about this. I am determined to do that, Kumar has already changed most of our bulbs, i have to check if any more are yet to be converted.

The latest addition to my kitchen - an eco-smart kitchen cutting board - Made of 100% recycled food-grade plastic and premium flax husk blend. Continuing to go green .... if anyone with more knowledge than me feels that recycled plastic is not really such a big thing in terms of being eco-conscious, pls feel free to impart your wisdom, i would love to know if i'm going in the right direction or am i just wasting my money.

I cannot end this post without telling you'll about my 2 wonderful, and physically and mentally exhausting boys. Anshul is turning out to be an AAB- Annoyingly Affectionate Brother. Wants to hug and kiss and smother kutti all the time, keeps saying "he loves me". Kutti also lights up the moment he sees "anna", they form a Mutual Adoration Society. Whenever i give kutti medicine which has been a regular thing for the last one month, and he bawls and purses his lips tightly in resistance, Anshul sits there and cries and asks us not to hurt his brother, he thadavifies kutti's head saying 'you're ok papa, you're ok, anna's here". So far so good, thankful that the emotion is positive right now.

I am thankful for this blog, it is turning out to be the bright spot in my days when i'm most of the time in the doldrums, and a state of [i hate to use the other D word ... ]. Gotta warn you'll to look out for rantings and ravings along with real-time updates of our boring and monotonous life.

Swathi did say "just jump", so i did ...

  9. Goodness, gracious,me!Wow Bhavan, that was a massive effort for a person with both handsful of kids and the laundry!Thank you for your lovely long comment!Glad to know that you have changed your bulbs. On GC's insistence, we changed ours 1 year back. And other things too. We recycle all our garden garbage and our uncooked food, give all our plastics and the newspaper(including leaflets and envelopes in which we get mail, and sheets of used paper to the paperman where it goes for recycling. We used the backside, (blankside)of papers for notes taking etc, and importantly , never throw the milk sachets(which I find the Hyderabad folks doing)into the waste bin.As a result, we have just a small bag full of garbage every 2 or 3 days. Bhavan, all these for India , where we have no strict rules for segregation at source.Since we are all literate enough and aware enough of the toll that the environment is taking ,thanks to our insensitivity, let us segregate at source, using just simple common sense. Thanks in advance.

  10. We are also trying to contribute to this 'environment consciousness' - changed most of the bulbs to CFL - as a result, my eye power has increased , have to change my spectacles now. Wondering what to do with my old ones as they have plastic frames - so dont know where to throw them.

Bhavan - it is nice to hear that Rishab has started 'talking' -a born American!! he says blah, blah- our Indian born babies start saying 'thatha, papa, amma' first

  11. Bharath,
I understand your predicament. Will ask Gopu to write about this. Good question about the spectacles.Give your old spectacles , if it is possible back to the shop, to see if they can donate it. Some shops do that.Anybody , any suggestions?

  12. Good one Bharath p'ma, abt the "side effect" of CFLs - decreased visibility.

Even anshul started his "talking" with "dada", but kutti's vocab seems to be taking a different turn. water appears to be thicker than blood in this case.

  13. Bhavana,

congratulations on getting a cutting board that you can eat if your fridge ever gets empty! At least it sounded that way but I may have got the wrong impression. Anyway, I'm very impressed that you managed to post despite having two kids to handle. You also made me feel good that there is someone who has even more unread emails than me!
